Under US law this has been illegal since the 1975 introduction of the
Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, despite companies often lying about it and putting "WARRANTY VOID IF REMOVED" stickers and whatnot on them. A company may only void the warranty if damage has been caused by the user or 3rd party, and if they can prove it was not due to a defect in the product.
